The Tabernacle

The Ark of the Covenant was stored in a sacred tent (Tabernacle) before eventually being moved to Jerusalem. The Tabernacle was also known as the Tent of the Congregation or Tent of Meeting.

According to the Bible, the Ark was carried by the Israelites during the forty years of wandering in the desert. During this time it was placed in a sacred tent whenever they made camp, which was called the Tabernacle. Inside the Tabernacle was an inner room, the Holiest of Holies, but there was also an outer chamber where, according to Exodus 25, knobs, flowers, bowls, and a sheet of gold was kept. Parts of the Tabernacle were also made of shittah wood, as was the Ark.

Significance of the three parts: The three parts of the Tabernacle and its objects symbolize the three main parts of man and its functions. The Outer Court symbolizes the body, the Holy Place represents the soul and the Holy of Holies symbolizes the spirit.

Tabernacle vs. Temple: The tabernacle is first mentioned in Exodus 25 when God instructed Moses to build one – also referred to as a tent of meeting – to host the presence of the Lord. The temple in Jewish life refers to the temple built in Jerusalem that was the central place of worship.
