Protoevangelium: The Road to Redemption/Path of Salvation
- Scripture: Genesis 3:15 says, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” This is known as the protoevangelium—the first gospel. The verse introduces two elements previously unknown in the Garden of Eden, elements that are the basis of Christianity—the curse on mankind because of Adam’s sin and God’s provision for a Savior from sin who would take the curse upon Himself.
- Definition: The term "Proto-Evangelion" (also spelled "Protoevangelium") comes from the Greek words "protos" (first) and "evangelion" (gospel). It literally means "first gospel" or "first good news."
- Biblical Reference: The Proto-Evangelion refers specifically to Genesis 3:15, which states: "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." (ESV)
- Significance:
1) Considered by many Christian theologians to be the first messianic prophecy in the Bible.
2) It's seen as the first announcement of redemption, hence the term "first gospel."
3) The verse is interpreted as God's promise that the seed of the woman (often understood as Jesus Christ) will ultimately defeat the serpent (often interpreted as Satan or evil).
